Woman Hid Grandmother's Body in Drum for Two Weeks

In a shocking incident in Madurai, a woman concealed the body of her 80-year-old grandmother in a plastic drum for two weeks before burying it behind her house in Melur on Wednesday. The discovery was made after neighbors complained about a foul odor emanating from the property, prompting police to recover the body and launch an investigation.

Details of the Incident

Veerammal, a resident of Mangalampatti, had been bedridden for the past five months and was being cared for by her granddaughter Amsavalli. When Veerammal passed away on April 23, Amsavalli placed the body inside a plastic drum at her home and left for her native place. She returned on Wednesday and, with the help of her brother-in-law, buried the body behind her house.

Neighbors Alert Police

Suspicious of the persistent stench, neighbors contacted the authorities. The village administrative officer filed a formal complaint regarding the improper handling and burial of the deceased. Subsequently, Kottampatti police registered a case and began an inquiry.

Police recovered the body and sent it for postmortem examination. A senior police official stated that Amsavalli claimed she placed the body in the drum because she did not know what else to do. The official added, "We have asked doctors to assess whether the granddaughter is suffering from any mental health condition."

The investigation is ongoing as authorities seek to understand the circumstances surrounding the incident.
