Woman Allegedly Sexually Harassed After Accident in Kayamkulam; Police Case Registered

ALAPPUZHA: A disturbing case has emerged in Kayamkulam, where a 25-year-old woman, injured in a road accident, was allegedly sexually harassed by a man while being transported to a hospital. Police officials confirmed on Sunday that a formal case has been registered based on the victim's complaint.

Details of the Incident and Accused

The accused has been identified as Sinil Sabad, a trader from Kayamkulam. The incident occurred in the early hours of April 4, around 12:45 AM, when the vehicle carrying the woman and her family hit a median at KPAC Junction while returning from a pilgrimage. Sabad, along with others present at the scene, assisted in shifting the injured family members to a hospital.

However, the complainant alleges that during this process, Sabad made sexual advances and inappropriately touched her. Upon reaching a private hospital, the woman immediately informed the doctors about the harassment, who then alerted the police, leading to the registration of the case.

Alleged Lapses in Investigation and Police Response

The victim has raised serious concerns about the investigation, claiming that police have not yet recorded her detailed statement and that no medical examination has been conducted. She also stated to the media on Sunday that the accused was questioned but later released without arrest.

An officer from the Kayamkulam police station clarified that the investigation is ongoing, with witness statements being recorded before any decision on arrest is made. In response to the incident, State Police Chief Ravada A Chandrasekhar has sought a detailed report from the Alappuzha district police chief.

Additionally, police sources indicate that an internal probe has been initiated to examine possible lapses in the investigation, with a report expected to be submitted to the State police chief within two days.

Legal and Privacy Considerations

In accordance with Supreme Court directives on cases related to sexual assault, the identity of the victim has been protected to safeguard her privacy. This case highlights ongoing challenges in handling such sensitive incidents and underscores the need for thorough and prompt investigative procedures.

The incident has sparked attention in the region, emphasizing the importance of victim support and accountability in law enforcement processes.
