Woman Throws Infant from Moving Train in Jharkhand

A 30-year-old woman allegedly threw her infant from a moving train in Jharkhand late Wednesday, and was caught by fellow passengers while attempting to kill her three-year-old son in a similar manner, police said on Thursday.

Incident Details

The incident occurred between Mahali Marup and Raj Kharsawan railway stations on the 12021 Howrah-Barbil Janshatabdi Express. The accused, identified as Mudrawati Gope, alias Hasina Begum, was traveling with her husband Mohammad Shahabuddin and their two children. The family boarded the train in West Bengal and were scheduled to disembark at Chaibasa.

Mudrawati, a resident of Majhgaon in West Singhbhum district, reportedly eloped with Shahabuddin four years ago. Her parents subsequently filed an FIR with the Majhgaon police station, accusing Shahabuddin, a resident of West Bengal, of kidnapping and luring their daughter.

Sequence of Events

The couple boarded the train after police allegedly traced them and pressured them to surrender. Mudrawati allegedly threw her youngest child out of the moving train, alerting fellow passengers. Moments later, passengers intervened and stopped her as she attempted to throw her three-year-old son. The couple tried to pull the emergency chain and jump from the train, but passengers restrained them.

The couple were handed over to the Railway Protection Force (RPF) by passengers after the train reached Chaibasa station. “Mudrawati lost consciousness repeatedly and was admitted to Chaibasa Sadar Hospital,” said the RPF post-in-charge at Chaibasa. The couple’s custody was then transferred to Kharsawan police.

Police Investigation

“The woman is undergoing medical treatment. Her husband and surviving son are at the hospital under police surveillance,” said Gaurav Kumar, officer-in-charge of Kharsawan police station. “The body of the infant has been recovered, and police will question the woman regarding her motive once she is medically fit to speak,” the OC added.

Authorities are investigating the case, and further details are awaited as the woman recovers.
