Woman's Body Found in Zirakpur Drain, Probe On

Panic spread through the bustling Airport Road area in Zirakpur on Friday afternoon after the grim discovery of an unidentified woman's body in a rainwater drain. The incident, which drew large crowds, has prompted a detailed investigation by local authorities.

Discovery and Immediate Response

The sequence of events began when a vigilant passerby noticed a suspicious object in the drainage channel alongside Airport Road near H-Block. The individual promptly alerted the police by dialing the emergency number 112. Acting swiftly on the tip, a team from the Zirakpur police reached the spot and retrieved the body from the drain.

Soon after the news circulated, a substantial crowd gathered at the location. Police and forensic teams were dispatched to the scene to begin their preliminary work and evidence collection.

Details of the Deceased and Investigation

Police officials stated that the woman is estimated to be between 20 and 25 years old. The condition of the body indicated that the death occurred approximately two days prior to its discovery, with signs of decomposition already present. This has complicated immediate identification.

"The woman appeared to belong to a migrant family. No mobile phone, documents, or identity proof were recovered from the body, making identification difficult," revealed a police officer involved in the case. The body was subsequently sent to the mortuary at Dera Bassi Civil Hospital, where it will be kept for the standard 72-hour period to allow for possible identification by family or acquaintances.

Probe into Circumstances of Death

The police are exploring all possibilities regarding the cause of death. A forensic team meticulously collected evidence from the drain and its surroundings. Authorities are investigating whether the death was accidental or if the body was dumped after a murder. To piece together the timeline, investigators are scrutinizing CCTV footage from cameras installed along Airport Road. This footage is crucial to determine how and when the body reached the drain.

ASI Baljeet Singh, the investigating officer from Zirakpur Police, provided an official update: "We received information on 112, after which the team reached the spot and took the body into custody. Initial findings suggest the body is around two days old. It has been kept in the Dera Bassi hospital mortuary for 72 hours for identification. The case is being investigated seriously from all angles." The police probe remains active as they work to unravel the mystery behind the young woman's death and establish her identity.
