A tragic incident occurred in Namakkal town on Tuesday when a dilapidated building collapsed during demolition at Ganesapuram, resulting in the death of one worker and injuries to another. The deceased was identified as K Venkatesh, 21, a construction worker from Palappattiy near Paramathi Velur. He was trapped under the debris and died on the spot. The injured worker, V Satheesh, 25, a relative of Venkatesh from Sengappalli, survived but lost a leg in the accident. He was initially rushed to Namakkal Government Medical College Hospital for emergency care and later transferred to a private hospital in Coimbatore for further treatment.
Protest and Police Response
Following the incident, relatives of the workers blocked the road in front of the Namakkal district collector’s office in protest, demanding appropriate compensation for the families of the deceased and the injured worker. Police personnel from Namakkal town, led by Inspector Elavarasan, intervened and held talks with the protesters. After receiving assurances of financial support from the government’s labour department, the protesters dispersed.
Legal Action
Police have registered a case against building owner Deepa, engineer Praveen, and contractor Sivakumar. An investigation into the matter is ongoing.
