Yamuna Expressway Declared No-Protest Zone by Noida Police
Yamuna Expressway No-Protest Zone: Noida Police

In a significant move aimed at ensuring commuter safety and uninterrupted traffic flow, the Noida police have declared the entire 41-kilometer stretch of the Yamuna Expressway in Gautam Budh Nagar as a no-protest zone. The decision, which comes into effect immediately, prohibits any political or non-political demonstrations along this high-speed corridor that connects Delhi-NCR to western Uttar Pradesh. The ban will also apply to the area near the upcoming Noida International Airport, which is set to become operational from June 15.

High Court Order Triggers Action

The police action follows a directive from the Allahabad High Court issued on May 22, which explicitly prohibits any form of demonstration on the expressway. The court's order aims to prevent disruptions to emergency services, traffic congestion, and potential risks to commuters on this busy route. The Noida police have now implemented the order by installing signboards at key points along the expressway, at the commissionerate office, and at concerned police stations to inform the public about the restrictions.

Zero Point: A Historical Protest Site

The ban is expected to have a particular impact on Zero Point, the interchange at the start of the Yamuna Expressway. Over the past five years, this location has emerged as the region's most prominent protest site, especially for farmers. Situated at the junction of Noida and Greater Noida, Zero Point has been a favored spot for demonstrations seeking visibility and administrative leverage. Its strategic location makes it a focal point for agitations, often leading to significant traffic disruptions.

Recent Protests and Police Response

The significance of Zero Point as a protest venue came to the forefront during the farm law agitation in November 2020, when farmer groups marching towards Delhi were stopped by police at the interchange. More recently, on December 2, 2024, nearly 5,000 farmers gathered around Zero Point and the adjoining expressway corridor during a 'Delhi Chalo' call, protesting against land acquisition and compensation grievances. The protest caused severe traffic disruption, and the situation escalated after police detained 123 farmer leaders from a protest site near the Delhi-Noida border.

Enforcement and Awareness Campaigns

The Noida police have launched awareness drives to ensure that residents and organizations are informed about the court's directions. Continuous monitoring will be carried out to enforce compliance, and those attempting to organize or participate in demonstrations on the prohibited stretch will face legal action. The police have urged the public to cooperate and use alternative routes for any lawful protests.
