Youth killed as speeding car hits tea shop in Alappuzha

A tragic accident occurred in Alappuzha on Monday afternoon when a speeding car lost control, ploughed into several vehicles, and fatally struck a man who was drinking tea at a roadside shop. The incident took place near Pazhaveed Medical Centre around 3:15 pm.

Victim identified

The deceased has been identified as S Sudheesh, 35, a construction worker from Thakidiveli in Ward 12 of Kanjikuzhy panchayat. He was returning home to Muhamma with his wife, Sujimol, after visiting a relative in Thiruvalla. The couple stopped at the tea shop for a break. As Sudheesh leaned against his bike holding his tea, the oncoming car struck him, throwing him off. He was rushed to Alappuzha General Hospital but succumbed to his injuries.

Sequence of events

The car, traveling from the Kaithavana area towards Alappuzha, first hit an autorickshaw, then a scooter and a bike before mounting a mud mound and coming to a halt. The parked vehicles belonged to other customers who had also stopped for tea. The car’s occupants were from Punnamada, Alappuzha. The driver was the brother of a pregnant woman on board, who was being taken to the hospital with abdominal pain. Also in the car were her husband and their child.

Legal action

Alappuzha South police have registered a case against the driver. Investigations are ongoing.

Family left behind

Sudheesh leaves behind his wife Sujimol (also known as Suja) and their two children, Varundev and Vamika. His body is currently kept at the General Hospital mortuary and will be handed over to relatives after a postmortem examination scheduled for Tuesday.
