Mysuru: Tension gripped Masanapura village in Chamarajanagar district on Sunday after a youth allegedly desecrated a portrait of national leader B.R. Ambedkar. The incident, which occurred around 5 a.m., led to locals tying the 19-year-old suspect, Chandru, to an electricity pole and assaulting him before police intervened.
Incident Details
According to sources, Chandru allegedly damaged the portrait of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar installed on the main road of the village. Witnessing the act, enraged villagers caught hold of him, tied him to an electricity pole, and physically assaulted him. As news spread, police rushed to the spot and rescued the youth from the mob.
Protest and Police Response
Following the rescue, villagers gathered to protest, demanding justice and urging authorities to arrest those they believed were behind the incident. Kollegala MLA A.R. Krishnamurthy and other officials visited the village and persuaded the protesters to withdraw their agitation. As a precautionary measure, police security was tightened, and senior police officers conducted a visit to assess the situation.
The district administration has assured a thorough investigation into the matter. Authorities have also appealed for calm and urged residents to maintain peace.
