In a major recovery operation, police seized 100 crude bombs from the house of a Trinamool Congress (TMC) worker in West Bengal's Bhangar area. The explosives were discovered during a search of the residence of Rafikul Islam, carried out on the basis of specific intelligence inputs.
The operation was conducted by a joint team of local police and special task force personnel. Officials stated that the bombs were found hidden in a concealed compartment within the house. The area has been cordoned off, and a bomb disposal squad was called in to safely handle the explosives.
Investigation underway
Rafikul Islam, the TMC worker, has been taken into custody for questioning. Preliminary investigations suggest that the bombs were possibly intended for use during the ongoing election campaign in the state. West Bengal is currently in the midst of assembly elections, and security has been heightened across the region.
Police are also probing whether the accused has any links to larger criminal networks or if the explosives were meant to disrupt law and order. Forensic teams have collected samples from the site for further analysis.
Political reactions
The recovery has sparked a political slugfest. The opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Congress have demanded a thorough investigation and accused the TMC of fostering a culture of violence. The TMC, however, has distanced itself from the incident, stating that if any party worker is found guilty, strict action will be taken.
Local residents expressed shock over the recovery, saying they had no idea such a large cache of explosives was stored in their neighborhood. Security has been increased in the area to prevent any untoward incidents.
This is not the first instance of recovery of arms and explosives in West Bengal during the election season. Authorities have stepped up surveillance and search operations to ensure free and fair polls.
