Trichy: A 14-year-old girl who became trapped in a 70-foot deep dry well while herding goats near Trichy on Sunday was rescued after a six-hour operation. The girl, identified as S Dhanushiya from Karukudi village near Musiri in Trichy district, had climbed down into the well to rescue one of her goats that had slipped and fallen, but was unable to climb back up.

Incident Details

Dhanushiya, a Class 10 student, went to graze goats in the fields along the Karukudi-Karuppampatti Road on Sunday afternoon. When she did not return home by nightfall, her parents began searching for her. Unable to locate her, they filed a complaint at the Thathaiyangarpettai police station.

Police and Rescue Operation

The parents informed police that Dhanushiya had her mobile phone with her. Officers traced the phone's last known location to the grazing area and immediately rushed there to search for her. Upon arrival, police discovered a well and, peering inside, spotted Dhanushiya standing on a ledge, trembling. Local villagers attempted to climb down to rescue her, but darkness hampered their efforts. They then alerted the fire and rescue services station in Musiri.

The firemen reached the spot at 10:30 PM, set up lights, prepared harnesses and ropes, and lowered themselves into the well. They secured a harness around Dhanushiya and safely lifted her out at 11:50 PM. An injured lamb that had also fallen into the well was rescued along with her.

Dhanushiya's Ordeal

Dhanushiya told police that her mobile phone had dropped into the well, preventing her from calling for help. The rescue operation was a coordinated effort between local police, villagers, and the fire services, ensuring her safe return.
