Three employees of the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KKRTC) have been suspended for driving a bus using only the light from a mobile phone torch after the vehicle's headlight failed. The incident occurred on the night of July 4, when the bus was operating on a route and its headlight was not emitting light properly. As a result, the driver resorted to using a mobile phone torch to illuminate the road, and the bus reached Chincholi without proper lighting.
Suspension and Inquiry Ordered
According to KKRTC officials, the three suspended employees include the bus driver, the conductor, and a mechanic. The suspension was ordered after a preliminary inquiry revealed negligence in ensuring the vehicle's roadworthiness before departure. The bus was reportedly not checked for functional headlights, leading to the dangerous situation.
Safety Concerns and Public Reaction
The incident has raised serious safety concerns among passengers and transport authorities. Driving a public service vehicle without proper headlights at night poses a significant risk of accidents. A KKRTC spokesperson stated, "We have zero tolerance for such negligence. The safety of our passengers is our top priority, and we will take strict action against any lapses." The bus was carrying passengers during the journey, but no injuries were reported.
Background of KKRTC Operations
KKRTC operates bus services across several districts in Karnataka, including the Kalaburagi region where this incident took place. The corporation has faced previous criticism over maintenance issues, and this case has prompted calls for stricter vehicle inspection protocols. The suspended employees are currently under investigation, and further disciplinary action may follow based on the final report.
