Five individuals sustained injuries during a violent protest that erupted in Salem, Tamil Nadu, on Sunday, following a dispute over a statue of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. The demonstration, which began as a peaceful gathering, escalated rapidly, prompting police to resort to a baton charge (lathi charge) to disperse the agitated crowd and restore order.
Protest Escalates into Violence
The incident occurred in the heart of Salem city, where a group of protesters had assembled to demand the relocation of an Ambedkar statue. According to local authorities, the situation turned tense when some participants began throwing stones and damaging public property. Police personnel deployed at the scene attempted to calm the crowd, but the aggression intensified, leading to the use of force.
A senior police official, speaking on condition of anonymity, stated, "The protesters were warned multiple times to disperse peacefully. When they refused and continued their violent actions, we had no choice but to use baton charges to prevent further escalation and ensure the safety of civilians and property."
Five Injured, Condition Stable
Medical officials at the Salem Government Hospital confirmed that five individuals were admitted with minor injuries, including bruises and fractures. They are currently in stable condition and receiving treatment. The injured include three men and two women, all residents of nearby localities. No police personnel were reported injured in the clash.
The Ambedkar statue, located in a prominent intersection, has been a subject of contention for weeks, with some local groups demanding its removal to a designated park, citing traffic congestion and safety concerns. Others, however, view the statue as a symbol of Dalit pride and oppose any relocation.
Police Investigation Underway
Salem Police Commissioner R. Sivakumar confirmed that an investigation has been launched into the incident. "We have registered a case against unidentified individuals for rioting, assault on public servants, and damaging public property. CCTV footage from the area is being reviewed to identify the perpetrators," he said. Additional police forces have been deployed in the area to prevent any further unrest.
The violence has sparked political reactions, with leaders from various parties condemning the incident. DMK spokesperson T.K.S. Elangovan urged the state government to ensure a thorough inquiry and take strict action against those responsible. Meanwhile, BJP state president K. Annamalai criticized the ruling party for failing to maintain law and order, calling the incident "a shameful act of intolerance."
Community Leaders Call for Calm
Community leaders and social activists have appealed for calm and dialogue. Dr. S. Rajendran, a local Dalit rights activist, said, "The statue represents the legacy of Dr. Ambedkar, which is revered by millions. Any dispute should be resolved through peaceful discussions, not violence. We urge both sides to exercise restraint and allow the legal process to take its course."
The Salem district administration has announced a meeting with representatives from all stakeholder groups to address the issue and find a mutually acceptable solution. Meanwhile, the Ambedkar statue remains in its current location, with police providing security to prevent any further damage or desecration.
