In a tragic incident in Uttar Pradesh's Hamirpur district, six labourers lost their lives after a concrete slab of an under-construction bridge collapsed on them late Thursday night. According to police sources, the victims were resting beneath the bridge when the slab gave way.
Details of the Incident
The collapse occurred around midnight, catching the labourers off guard as they slept. Rescue teams rushed to the spot and pulled out the bodies from the debris. The deceased were identified as migrant workers from Bihar who were employed at the construction site.
Police and Administration Response
Senior police and administrative officials visited the site to assess the situation. The district administration has ordered a probe into the incident to determine the cause of the collapse. Preliminary reports suggest possible structural weakness or negligence in construction practices.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister expressed grief over the loss of lives and announced an ex-gratia compensation of Rs 5 lakh each to the families of the deceased. He also instructed officials to ensure proper safety measures at all construction sites to prevent such accidents in the future.
Safety Concerns at Construction Sites
This incident has once again raised questions about safety standards at infrastructure projects in the state. Labour rights activists have called for stricter enforcement of safety norms and regular inspections. The contractor involved in the bridge construction has been booked for negligence.
