AAP vs Raghav Chadha Rift Intensifies Amid Allegations of Betrayal and Political Collusion
The internal conflict within the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has reached a critical juncture as senior leaders publicly accuse Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha of betrayal. The deepening rift coincides with recent Enforcement Directorate (ED) action against party MP Ashok Mittal, which AAP leaders are now linking directly to the internal fallout.
Security Upgrade and Alleged Political Coordination
The escalation comes amid reports that Raghav Chadha has been granted Z-category security by the central government, triggering sharp reactions from AAP leadership. Senior party figures have alleged political collusion between Chadha and the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), suggesting a coordinated pattern involving central agencies, political appointments, and security provisions.
AAP MLA Saurabh Bharadwaj launched a direct attack on Chadha and the BJP, stating in a social media post: "BJP Government's toolbox is completely predictable. Raghav Chadha was threatened by ED and he, out of fear or greed, decided to backstab his party who made him an MP. When Raghav is criticized on social media, BJP supporters immediately come to his defense. After AAP replaced Raghav with Ashok Mittal as deputy leader, ED instead of targeting Raghav, goes after Ashok Mittal with raids on his home and business. Meanwhile, the Centre provides Z+ security to Raghav Chadha. All these developments appear intricately linked."
ED Raids on Ashok Mittal Trigger Political Storm
The Enforcement Directorate conducted extensive searches at approximately ten locations linked to AAP Rajya Sabha MP Ashok Kumar Mittal in Punjab and Haryana under the Foreign Exchange Management Act. The raids covered premises associated with Lovely Professional University and related educational institutions, where Mittal serves as Chancellor.
This enforcement action has been described by AAP leaders as politically motivated, particularly in the context of upcoming Punjab Assembly elections. Mittal, who recently replaced Chadha as deputy leader in the Upper House, now finds himself at the center of this controversy.
Leadership Reactions and Political Accusations
AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal accused the central government of initiating a political crackdown ahead of elections, stating: "Modi ji has started preparations for the Punjab elections. But the people of Punjab will not tolerate this manipulation and will deliver a befitting response to the BJP."
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann echoed these concerns, condemning the raids and suggesting central agencies are being weaponized as part of an electoral strategy. AAP MP Sanjay Singh intensified the attack, accusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi of systematically misusing institutions to secure electoral advantage.
Singh elaborated: "Wherever elections are held, the BJP deploys its agencies. PM Modi's popularity has declined nationwide, leaving him with only one option: to misuse the ED, CBI, and Election Commission to win elections. This formula will not succeed in Punjab. The sudden and massive attack on Ashok Mittal exemplifies this strategy."
BJP Counterattack and Corruption Allegations
Responding to AAP's allegations, Union Minister Ravneet Singh Bittu launched a counterattack, accusing AAP of systemic corruption. "Bhagwant Mann, your party represents thieves and robbers. The people of Punjab are filing cases against state ministers, and investigation agencies are apprehending corrupt MPs. Modi ji's Clean India policy will certainly eliminate this filth," Bittu stated.
Roots of the Internal Crisis
The current crisis traces back to Chadha's removal as deputy leader in the Rajya Sabha, a significant setback for one of AAP's prominent national figures. Once considered a close aide of Kejriwal and a key strategist behind the party's 2022 Punjab victory, Chadha has recently found himself at odds with party leadership.
AAP leaders have accused him of:
- Deviating from the official party line
- Engaging in what they term "soft PR" activities
- Failing to aggressively target the central government in Parliament
- Being absent during crucial political moments including protests and leadership crises
Chadha has rejected these allegations as baseless and politically motivated. In a video message, he stated that his silence should not be misinterpreted as weakness and challenged the party to provide evidence supporting their claims.
Political Implications and Electoral Context
The fallout has evolved from internal disagreements to a full-blown public confrontation, with leaders openly questioning Chadha's loyalty and intentions. Bharadwaj's remarks linking him to ED action represent one of the most severe attacks by the party against its own parliamentarian.
These developments occur at a critical juncture for AAP, particularly in Punjab where the party holds power and faces imminent electoral challenges. The convergence of internal dissent, central agency actions, and political attacks from rivals has created a volatile environment that could significantly impact the party's electoral prospects.
The sharp exchange between AAP and BJP underscores the intensifying political battle in Punjab ahead of elections, with both sides trading allegations regarding corruption and misuse of governmental power. As the controversy continues to unfold, it raises fundamental questions about political integrity, institutional independence, and the nature of democratic competition in contemporary Indian politics.
