Aam Aadmi Party Removes Raghav Chadha as Rajya Sabha Deputy Leader

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has made a significant leadership change in the Rajya Sabha, dropping Raghav Chadha from his position as deputy leader and appointing Ashok Mittal in his place. The party formally communicated this decision to the Rajya Sabha secretariat on Thursday, with the official website reflecting the update by evening.

Background of the Key Figures

Both Raghav Chadha and Ashok Mittal hail from Punjab, adding a regional dimension to this political reshuffle. AAP currently holds 10 seats in the Rajya Sabha, which includes estranged MP Swati Maliwal. This move to replace Chadha has fueled speculation about a widening rift between him and the party's top leadership, particularly under the guidance of Arvind Kejriwal.

Once considered a trusted aide of Kejriwal, Chadha has appeared increasingly sidelined in recent months. His absence from key party events and his silence on critical issues raised by senior members, despite serving as the national spokesperson, have set rumor mills abuzz.

Signs of Growing Disconnect

The first clear indication of trouble emerged in March 2024 when Arvind Kejriwal, then Delhi Chief Minister, was arrested in connection with the excise policy case. Chadha, who was widely seen as a close confidant of Kejriwal, was notably absent during this period. Although the party attributed his absence to medical reasons abroad, his prolonged silence did not sit well with the AAP supremo.

More recently, Chadha failed to comment on the acquittal of Kejriwal and former Delhi Deputy CM Manish Sisodia in a liquor case last month. He was also missing from Kejriwal's subsequent press conference and a rally at Jantar Mantar, further highlighting his detachment from party activities.

Chadha's Cryptic Response

Later on Thursday, Chadha took to social media platform X to share a cryptic post. He uploaded a video compilation of his parliamentary speeches addressing issues affecting ordinary Indians, such as tax burdens and gig workers' rights. The post was accompanied by an evil eye emoji, suggesting a subtle defiance or acknowledgment of the ongoing speculation.

This leadership change underscores the evolving dynamics within AAP, as the party navigates internal challenges while maintaining its political stance. The appointment of Ashok Mittal signals a strategic shift, potentially aimed at consolidating support and streamlining party operations in the Rajya Sabha.
