Aam Aadmi Party Stages Protest in Kanpur Over LPG Crisis and Inflation
Workers of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) organized a significant protest at the Bharat Mata statue near Ghantaghar in Kanpur on Saturday. The demonstration was aimed at drawing attention to the alleged severe shortage of LPG cylinders and the escalating inflation affecting daily life. The protest was conducted under the directives of Rajya Sabha MP and Uttar Pradesh in-charge Sanjay Singh, highlighting the party's statewide concerns.
Symbolic Demonstration with Empty Cylinders and Utensils
Demonstrators carried empty LPG cylinders, stoves, kadhai, and other utensils to visually emphasize the hardships faced by traders and small vendors. This symbolic act was designed to showcase how the scarcity and high prices of commercial cylinders are crippling local businesses. A large gathering of party workers assembled at the site, raising slogans against what they described as black marketing of gas cylinders, which exacerbates the supply issues.
Clash with Police and Party's Accusations
During the protest, a scuffle broke out between the demonstrators and local police, as reported by Kanpur party spokesperson Madan Lal Bhatia. The tension underscored the urgency of the issues being raised. AAP members asserted that the increase in LPG prices and the shortage of commercial cylinders have adversely impacted thousands of shops, factories, cart vendors, and street food sellers. They argued that this situation has led to significant livelihood losses for many individuals, directly blaming government policies for the crisis.
Key Demands Presented in Memorandum
As part of the protest, party workers submitted a memorandum addressed to the President through the local police. The document outlined several critical demands, including a rollback of the recent hike in domestic LPG cylinder prices. Additionally, they called for a transparent policy to control petrol and diesel prices and the implementation of subsidies on cooking gas specifically for the poor and middle-class families, who are hardest hit by the economic strain.
Leadership and Coordination of the Protest
The demonstration was led by district president Anuj Shukla and coordinated by spokesperson Madan Lal Bhatia. Other key figures involved included general secretary Naresh Chandra Agrawal and organisation general secretary Yogesh Dixit. State spokespersons Sanjiv Nigam and Manish Gupta were also present, lending their support to the cause and amplifying the party's message against the perceived governmental failures in managing essential commodities.
