Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Tuesday launched a sharp attack on the Samajwadi Party (SP) and Congress, accusing them of hypocrisy over the Waqf land controversy. Speaking at a public event, he questioned why these parties, which have been vocal about alleged theft of offerings at the Ram Temple, remain silent on the Waqf issue.
Adityanath's Fevicol remark
“Samajwadi Party and Congress, which are attacking Sanatan faith over alleged theft of offerings at the Ram temple, were silent on the Waqf land issue. Why are their mouths glued shut with Fevicol?” Adityanath said, using a colloquial term for adhesive.
The chief minister’s remarks come amid a row over alleged mismanagement and corruption in the Uttar Pradesh Sunni Central Waqf Board. The opposition parties have been demanding a probe into the board's functioning, but Adityanath accused them of selective outrage.
Ram Mandir vs Waqf: The political divide
Adityanath highlighted that while SP and Congress leaders express pain over the Ram Mandir replacing the Babri Masjid, they ignore alleged irregularities in Waqf properties. “Seeing a Ram Mandir instead of Babri pains them, but they have no problem with Waqf land scams,” he said.
The CM’s attack is seen as an attempt to corner the opposition on religious and governance issues ahead of upcoming local body elections in the state.
Opposition's response
Samajwadi Party spokesperson Rajendra Chaudhary dismissed Adityanath's allegations, calling them a diversion tactic. “Instead of addressing the real issues of unemployment and inflation, the CM is making baseless accusations,” Chaudhary said.
Congress state president Ajay Kumar Lallu also criticized the remark, stating, “The CM should focus on governance rather than making such statements that divide society.”
