AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami Unveils Comprehensive Election Manifesto for Tamil Nadu

In a significant political move ahead of the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami officially released the party's manifesto on Tuesday. This extensive document outlines a total of 297 promises designed to address various societal and economic issues, positioning welfare measures as the cornerstone of the party's campaign strategy.

Key Welfare Initiatives and Financial Assistance Programs

The manifesto prominently features the Kula Vilakku Scheme, a groundbreaking initiative aimed at providing monthly financial support to female heads of households. Under this scheme, all ration cardholders will receive an assistance allowance of Rs 2,000 per month, which will be directly deposited into the bank account of the female head of the household. This measure is intended to foster economic equilibrium and empower women across the state.

Additionally, the AIADMK has pledged a special assistance sum of Rs 10,000 for every family in Tamil Nadu. According to the manifesto, this financial aid is specifically designed to help households cope with the escalating prices of essential commodities and the increased burden of various taxes, including property tax, house tax, electricity tariffs, and water charges. The party has attributed these economic challenges to what it describes as the administratively incompetent Stalin-led DMK regime, accusing it of lacking vision and causing widespread public distress over the past five years.

Expanded Benefits and Electoral Alliances

Beyond the core financial promises, the AIADMK manifesto includes several other welfare commitments. Ration card holders will now receive lentils along with their rice allocations, and each household will be provided with a refrigerator. The party also plans to extend the existing free bus travel scheme to include men, in addition to women, and will offer three free cooking gas cylinders per year to every ration cardholder.

The electoral landscape in Tamil Nadu is set for a highly competitive contest, with voting scheduled in a single phase on April 23 and counting on May 4. Under the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) seat-sharing agreement, the AIADMK-led alliance will contest more than 170 seats. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has been allocated 27 seats, followed by the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) with 18 seats and the Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK) with 11 seats.

Meanwhile, the AIADMK is actively accelerating negotiations to finalize an alliance with G.K. Vasan's Tamil Maanila Congress (M) and other smaller parties before the end of Tuesday. The main electoral battle is expected to be between the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance, which includes the Congress, DMDK, and VCK, and the NDA led by AIADMK with the BJP and PMK as key allies. Adding to the political dynamics, actor-turned-politician Vijay is poised to make his electoral debut with the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), potentially transforming the election into a three-way contest.
