AIADMK Finalizes Seat Allocation for Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections

The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) has announced its strategy for the upcoming assembly polls in Tamil Nadu, scheduled for April 23. The party will contest in 169 constituencies, which marks a reduction of 10 seats compared to the previous assembly election. This decision reflects a strategic shift in the AIADMK's approach to coalition politics, as it balances its own strongholds with concessions to key allies.

Regional Distribution and Alliance Dynamics

In its western stronghold, the AIADMK has maintained dominance by retaining the majority of constituencies. However, it has ceded eight out of 54 seats in this region to its alliance partners. This move is part of a broader pattern where the party has allocated a larger number of seats to allies across the northern, central, and southern districts of Tamil Nadu.

In southern Tamil Nadu, which comprises 55 seats across 10 districts, the AIADMK performed poorly in the 2021 assembly election. To address this, the party has allotted 19 seats to its allies in this region. This includes five seats for the Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK), which is banking on Thevar community votes, and 11 seats for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). In Kanyakumari district, the AIADMK has retained only one of six seats, allocating four to the BJP and one to G K Vasan's Tamil Maanila Congress (TMC).

Key Constituencies and Religious Significance

The AIADMK has strategically retained control over constituencies with religious importance, such as Tiruparankundram and Palani. However, in a notable concession, it has allotted Tiruchendur, one of the six abodes of Lord Murugan, to the BJP. This highlights the party's efforts to accommodate allies while safeguarding its core interests.

The Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK), led by Anbumani Ramadoss, has been allocated 18 seats, with most coming from its northern stronghold. Additionally, PMK received Perambur, where TVK president Vijay is expected to contest. Other significant seats allotted to allies include Mylapore to the BJP, Ambattur to PMK, and Poonamallee to AMMK.

Leadership Statements and Alliance Unity

AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami (EPS) confirmed the completion of seat sharing at the party headquarters on Wednesday. He was joined by alliance leaders, including Nainar Nagenthran, Anbumani Ramadoss, and T T V Dhinakaran. EPS emphasized the democratic nature of the AIADMK-led alliance, contrasting it with the DMK front. He stated that decisions regarding election symbols, such as minor partners' desire to contest under the BJP's lotus symbol, are left to the leaders of the constituent parties.

In a personal concession, EPS has ceded two constituencies from his home turf of Salem—Salem (West) and Salem (North)—to the PMK. This area has a significant Vanniyar vote base, indicating a strategic move to strengthen the alliance.

Challenges for Allies and Confident Outlook

G K Vasan's TMC has been assigned five seats that are considered challenging. Three of these—Oddanchatram, Erode West, and Ranipet—are currently held by DMK ministers R Sakkarapani, S Muthusamy, and R Gandhi. The party will also face tough opponents in Kumbakonam and Kiliyur. Despite these hurdles, EPS expressed confidence in the alliance's strength, dismissing concerns about rival candidates.

AIADMK sources indicate that the party plans to field strong candidates in Chennai to compete effectively against the DMK front. The AMMK has been given seats across various regions, including one in the western belt at Madathukulam, showcasing the broad geographic spread of the alliance's strategy.

Overall, the AIADMK's seat-sharing arrangement aims to consolidate its position while leveraging the strengths of its allies to mount a formidable challenge in the upcoming elections.
