AIADMK Leader EPS Holds Crucial Delhi Talks with Amit Shah on Seat-Sharing
AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami has embarked on another solo mission to Delhi, engaging in pivotal one-on-one discussions with Union Home Minister Amit Shah. The primary objective of this high-level meeting is to finalize the seat-sharing arrangement between the AIADMK and the BJP for the upcoming elections in Tamil Nadu.
Focus on Contentious Constituencies
According to reliable sources from both political camps, the negotiations are centered on a select few constituencies where the allies are anticipated to clash over claims. More than just numerical allocations, the tug-of-war revolves around specific constituencies considered strong pockets of the Dravidian major leading the alliance.
Senior leaders from both parties have expressed confidence that the EPS-Shah meeting will successfully iron out these differences. They anticipate that this dialogue will pave the way for a formal agreement to be reached in the coming days, solidifying the alliance's strategy.
Historical Context and Current Demands
It is noteworthy that EPS, who is the chief ministerial candidate of the alliance, previously flew to Delhi alone on March 2 for a nearly two-hour discussion with Shah at his residence. This latest trip underscores the ongoing efforts to streamline the partnership.
In the 2021 elections, the BJP was allocated 20 seats within the alliance. This time, the party is keen on contesting more seats than the Congress, which received 28 seats in the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance. This ambition adds a layer of complexity to the current negotiations, as the BJP seeks to expand its footprint in Tamil Nadu.
Final Round of Talks Expected
To complete the final round of discussions, Union Minister Piyush Goyal is expected to visit Chennai on Friday. This visit aims to wrap up the negotiations before the end of the week, ensuring that all parties are aligned and ready for the electoral battle ahead.
The outcome of these talks is crucial for the alliance's cohesion and electoral prospects, as seat-sharing agreements often determine the strength and unity of political partnerships in competitive states like Tamil Nadu.
