Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Tuesday launched a sharp attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent appeal to citizens to save fuel, asserting that such a move would have a detrimental impact on the markets and the broader economy.
Political Reaction to PM's Appeal
In a statement issued in Lucknow, Yadav said, "The Prime Minister's appeal to the public to reduce fuel consumption is not only impractical but also dangerous. It will rattle the markets and create uncertainty among investors." He further argued that the government should focus on reducing fuel prices rather than asking citizens to cut consumption.
Impact on Economy
Yadav highlighted that India's economy is heavily dependent on fuel consumption for transportation, agriculture, and industry. "Reducing fuel usage arbitrarily could slow down economic activities, affect supply chains, and lead to job losses," he added. The former Uttar Pradesh chief minister also accused the Modi government of failing to control rising fuel prices, which have reached record highs in recent months.
Government's Stand
The Prime Minister had earlier urged citizens to save fuel in the national interest, emphasizing that small efforts by individuals could collectively make a big difference. However, opposition parties have criticized the appeal as a diversion from the government's inability to manage fuel prices.
Yadav's remarks come amid a broader political debate over fuel pricing and its impact on inflation. The Samajwadi Party chief concluded by demanding an immediate reduction in excise duty and VAT on petrol and diesel to provide relief to the common man.
