Amit Shah Unveils Comprehensive Vision for North Bengal Development
Union Home Minister Amit Shah delivered a series of significant commitments aimed at transforming North Bengal during his political rallies on Wednesday. Speaking across multiple locations including Jalpaiguri, Falakata, and Tufanganj, Shah outlined a detailed agenda addressing long-standing regional concerns while issuing strong warnings against political violence.
Legal Reforms and Protection for Political Workers
Addressing a substantial gathering in Jalpaiguri, Shah made a firm commitment that a BJP government would systematically withdraw every false case filed against political activists, regardless of their party affiliation. He specifically highlighted the predicament of Gorkha leaders facing numerous legal challenges, promising immediate relief through case withdrawal. The Home Minister criticized what he termed "police raaj" in Bengal, vowing to establish a more transparent and fair law enforcement system.
Constitutional Recognition for Rajbanshi Language
In a landmark announcement, Shah pledged to include the Rajbanshi language in the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution. This move would grant official recognition and protection to the linguistic heritage of the Rajbanshi community, addressing a long-standing cultural demand from the region.
Advancing the Gorkhaland Resolution Process
During a virtual rally at Lebong Ground, Shah provided updates on the sensitive Gorkhaland issue, revealing that the central government has already appointed an interlocutor and conducted three meetings in Delhi to facilitate resolution. He expressed disappointment that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had declined to participate in these crucial discussions. "The people of Darjeeling are true patriots. They deserve their rights and justice, which have been denied to them," Shah emphasized, acknowledging the region's contributions while highlighting the need for political solutions.
The Centre-appointed interlocutor, Pankaj Kumar Singh, visited Darjeeling in January to advance tripartite talks involving representatives from hill regions, Terai, and Dooars alongside central and state government officials.
Economic and Social Welfare Initiatives
At his Falakata rally, Shah accused the state government of providing "stepmotherly" treatment to North Bengal and announced several welfare measures:
- Increasing tea garden workers' wages by Rs 500
- Providing land pattas (title deeds) to garden workers
- Establishing a Narayani Battalion within the state police force
- Implementing a Rs 2,000 monthly assistance program for widows, senior citizens, and persons with disabilities
Addressing Marginalized Communities and Women's Safety
Shah specifically highlighted the plight of the Toto community in Alipurduar, citing their health vulnerabilities, geographical isolation, and land alienation issues. On women's safety, he referenced incidents at RG Kar, Sandeshkhali, and Durgapur Medical College, promising that under BJP governance, "women would be able to roam freely even at midnight."
Strong Warning Against Electoral Violence
The Home Minister issued a direct warning to Trinamool Congress workers regarding potential poll-day violence, particularly referencing the attack on BJP Coochbehar South candidate Rathindranath Bose's convoy. "I am warning Trinamool's goons to stay indoors on April 23. Else they will be behind bars after May 5," Shah declared, adding that the BJP would decisively confront musclemen and end what he described as "mafia raaj" in the state.
