Annamalai Defends Mumbai as International City Amid Criticism

Annamalai Stands Firm on Mumbai as International City Amid Political Firestorm

Former Tamil Nadu BJP president K Annamalai has doubled down on his controversial statement about Mumbai. He insists the city is an international hub rather than exclusively Maharashtrian. This declaration comes just one day after sharp criticism from Shiv Sena (UBT) and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) leaders.

Political Backlash and Threats

Shiv Sena (UBT) and MNS leaders slammed Annamalai for his original remarks. They argued that Mumbai fundamentally belongs to Maharashtra and its Marathi-speaking population. In response, Annamalai issued a bold challenge to his critics.

"Some people threatened to cut my legs if I visit Mumbai. I will come to Mumbai. Try cutting my legs," Annamalai stated defiantly on Monday. He believes his comments were twisted and misrepresented for political purposes.

Clarifying the International City Remark

Annamalai attempted to clarify his position on Mumbai's identity. "If I say Mumbai is a world-class city, does that mean Maharashtrians didn't build it?" he questioned rhetorically. He emphasized that Mumbai's remarkable growth and development are deeply connected to the hard work and contributions of Marathi people.

He explained that calling Mumbai international acknowledges its global economic significance and diverse population. It does not deny the foundational role played by Maharashtrians.

BJP Ally Supports Annamalai's Stance

BJP MLA from Sion-Koliwada, R Tamil Selvan, came to Annamalai's defense. He asserted that the former BJP chief's statement was deliberately misconstrued. Political opponents are exploiting the remark for their own electoral gains, according to Selvan.

Opposition Demands and Mockery

The political reaction has been intense and multifaceted:

  • Shiv Sena (UBT) demanded Annamalai's immediate arrest for his comments.
  • MNS chief Raj Thackeray openly mocked Annamalai and questioned his right to speak about Mumbai's identity.
  • Both parties accused Annamalai of disrespecting Maharashtra's cultural and historical legacy.

This controversy highlights ongoing tensions about regional identity, migration, and political rhetoric in India's financial capital. It also underscores the delicate balance between celebrating Mumbai's global status and honoring its Maharashtrian roots.
