K Annamalai's exit from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has sparked speculation about whether he might eventually make a comeback, as many high-profile leaders have done in the past. Historically, most prominent departures from the BJP, whether at the national or state level, have ended with the leaders returning to the party fold.
Notable returns to the BJP
Several key figures who left the BJP later rejoined. Uma Bharti, a fiery orator and former chief minister of Madhya Pradesh, left the party in 2014 but returned in 2016. Kalyan Singh, former chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, quit in 2009 and returned in 2014. Jaswant Singh, a former external affairs minister, was expelled in 2014 but rejoined in 2016. B S Yediyurappa, former chief minister of Karnataka, left in 2012 and returned in 2014. Jagadish Shettar, also from Karnataka, left in 2019 and rejoined in 2023. Mukul Roy, a key leader from West Bengal, left in 2017 and returned in 2021.
Pattern of exits and returns
The pattern suggests that the BJP has a history of welcoming back former members, often after a period of estrangement. This has led to questions about whether Annamalai, who recently exited the party, might eventually make a U-turn. While the reasons for his departure remain unclear, the party's track record indicates that such exits are not always permanent.
Political analysts note that the BJP's organizational strength and electoral appeal often draw former leaders back. However, each case is unique, and Annamalai's future moves will depend on his personal political calculations and the party's stance. For now, the question remains: will history repeat itself?
