Andhra Pradesh Set for Parliamentary Transformation in Upcoming Delimitation
Vijayawada is at the center of a significant political and electoral shift as the Central government gears up for a nationwide delimitation exercise. This initiative is projected to substantially boost the number of Lok Sabha constituencies in Andhra Pradesh, potentially reshaping the state's parliamentary landscape ahead of the 2029 general elections.
Major Seat Increase and Political Support
Currently, Andhra Pradesh holds 25 Lok Sabha seats, a figure established after the state's bifurcation in 2014. Under the new proposals, the state could see an addition of 12 to 13 seats, raising the total to approximately 37 or 38 constituencies. This expansion is part of a broader national strategy to increase the Lok Sabha's strength from 543 to nearly 816-850 seats, aiming for more proportional representation aligned with population growth.
Interestingly, all three major political parties in Andhra Pradesh — the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), Janasena, and the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) — have decided to support the Bills in Parliament's special session. This stance contrasts with the strong opposition voiced by parties in other southern states like Telangana, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka.
Assembly Seats and Delimitation Details
Similarly, the state's Assembly seats are likely to be increased to 262-263 from the current 175. While the Centre had previously promised 225 Assembly seats in the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, the new proposal offers a more substantial rise. The delimitation process will involve redrawing constituency boundaries based on 2011 Census data, when Andhra Pradesh's population was around 4.95 crore.
Regions such as Visakhapatnam, Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, the Godavari districts, Krishna, Guntur, Anantapur, and Chittoor are expected to witness changes in representation. Some previously abolished constituencies, including Tenali, may be revived or restructured as part of this comprehensive exercise.
Women's Reservation and Social Representation
A key highlight of the proposed expansion is the implementation of a 33% reservation for women in Parliament. With the increased number of seats, Andhra Pradesh could elect around 12 to 13 women Members of Parliament, a sharp rise from the current three — Daggubati Purandeswari, Byreddi Sabari, and Gumma Tanuja Rani. The delimitation exercise is anticipated to integrate this quota by earmarking specific constituencies for women candidates.
Social representation will also play a crucial role in the new setup. The Scheduled Caste population in the state, approximately 84.69 lakh, is currently represented by four reserved seats — Bapatla, Amalapuram, Tirupati, and Chittoor. Meanwhile, the Scheduled Tribe population of around 27.40 lakh has one reserved constituency in Araku. District-wise demographic concentrations will guide the allocation of SC and ST reserved seats, alongside the inclusion of women's reservation. For instance, Krishna and West Godavari districts are likely to receive one SC reserved constituency each.
Commission Role and Broader Implications
The exercise will be carried out by the Delimitation Commission of India, which will assess factors such as population distribution, administrative convenience, and geographical continuity while finalizing boundaries. The use of 2011 Census data has sparked national debates, particularly among southern states, but in Andhra Pradesh, the move is largely viewed as an opportunity to enhance political representation.
Beyond mere numbers, the proposed increase is expected to open up new political avenues, enable more focused governance, and improve access between elected representatives and citizens.
