Vijayawada: Andhra Pradesh municipal administration and urban development minister P Narayana on Saturday dismissed allegations of inflated construction costs in Amaravati, stating that official figures show the capital’s major projects are being executed at reasonable rates. He made the remarks while inspecting bridge works across Kondaveeti Vagu and Pala Vagu in the capital region.
Inspection and Directives
During the inspection, the minister directed officials to ensure that bridge construction does not obstruct water flow during the monsoon. He also instructed them to closely monitor drainage systems and waterways to prevent flooding and water stagnation.
Media Interaction
Addressing the media, Narayana alleged that YSRCP leaders were spreading misinformation about Amaravati’s development and construction expenditure. He said the figures related to key housing projects in the capital clearly indicate that costs are in line with prevailing standards.
Project Cost Comparison
According to the minister, the HappyNest residential project was awarded at a cost of ₹984 crore, with a construction cost of ₹3,393 per square foot. The housing complex for gazetted officers was awarded for ₹1,003 crore, translating to ₹3,684 per square foot.
He compared these projects with the recently approved Central govt residential complex, for which a tender worth ₹1,234 crore was finalised. The project carries a construction cost of ₹3,945 per square foot, which, he said, is higher than the costs of both HappyNest and the gazetted officers’ housing projects.
Infrastructure Planning
Narayana said many of the buildings being developed in Amaravati are large public infrastructure projects designed for long-term use and equipped with modern facilities. He added that construction planning takes into account durability, future requirements and infrastructure standards.
Flood Management and Development
The minister also reviewed flood-management measures and said a total of 69 bridges are being constructed in the capital region, including 43 across Kondaveeti Vagu and Pala Vagu and 26 within Land Pooling Scheme layouts. He noted that the recent Union cabinet approval for central govt offices in Amaravati is expected to further accelerate development activities in the capital region.
