Indian Army to Receive Extended-Range Pinaka Rockets from Nagpur Firm
The Indian Army is poised to receive its inaugural batch of extended-range Pinaka rockets from Solar Defence and Aerospace Limited (SDAL), a Nagpur-based defence manufacturer, on Thursday. This delivery follows a successful proof test conducted on Wednesday, which validated the rockets' capability to accurately strike targets at distances up to 45 kilometers.
Successful Testing Paves Way for Delivery
Sources confirmed that the proof test involved rigorous quality checks on randomly selected samples from the production lot, clearing the final hurdle for induction into the Army's arsenal. This critical testing phase comes after extensive user trials had already been completed, ensuring the rockets meet operational standards.
This induction marks a significant milestone as it represents the first time the extended-range variant of Pinaka rockets will enter service with the Indian Army. The existing variants currently in use have a strike range of under 40 kilometers, making this upgrade a notable enhancement in artillery capabilities.
Dual-Supplier Strategy for Enhanced Systems
Both SDAL and Munitions India Limited (MIL) have secured contracts to supply these upgraded Pinaka rocket systems to the Indian Army. While SDAL's batch is ready for delivery following this week's successful proof test, MIL's batch is scheduled to undergo its own proof testing later this month, indicating a phased rollout of the enhanced artillery systems.
Export Challenges Amid Geopolitical Tensions
Interestingly, Indian defence firms have already been exporting more advanced guided variants of Pinaka rockets to Armenia. These export versions boast ranges exceeding 70 kilometers, surpassing the capabilities of the domestically inducted extended-range rockets.
However, these international deliveries have encountered significant logistical challenges. Indian manufacturers began supplying these systems to Armenia even before their induction into India's own armed forces, but Armenia's ongoing conflict with Azerbaijan has complicated transportation routes.
With Armenia effectively landlocked and neighboring allies of Azerbaijan restricting transit, the primary supply route had been through Iran. A private defence manufacturer and strategist noted that this route has now become increasingly uncertain due to the evolving geopolitical situation involving the US and Iran.
As a result, current consignments destined for Armenia are held up in India, awaiting clearance for shipment. Sources indicated that the last deliveries may have been dispatched as recently as February, highlighting how recent tensions have disrupted the supply chain.
Indigenous Development and Private Sector Milestone
The Pinaka rocket system represents a significant achievement in India's defence indigenization efforts. Originally developed from the Russian Smerch system, Pinaka was successfully indigenized in 2009 and initially produced by government ordnance factories.
SDAL has since become the first private sector company to manufacture the Pinaka system, which has emerged as a crucial component of India's artillery capabilities. This development underscores the growing role of private defence manufacturers in strengthening India's military preparedness through advanced indigenous technology.
