Indian Army Bolsters Arsenal with Hundreds of Kamikaze Drones from Domestic Manufacturer
In a significant boost to its unmanned capabilities, the Indian Army has received delivery of "hundreds of kamikaze drones" from a Gujarat-based deep-tech firm as part of an emergency procurement contract valued at Rs 10 crore. The deal, finalized with the defence ministry, underscores a strategic push towards rapid acquisition of indigenous defence technologies.
Emergency Procurement Accelerates Delivery Timeline
The contract was signed in December last year with Surat-based InsideFPV, a company recognized as a pioneer in first-person view (FPV) and kamikaze drone systems. Leveraging the emergency procurement route, the consignment was dispatched to the Army within a remarkably short two-month timeframe, highlighting the urgency and efficiency of the process.
For security reasons, the exact number of drones delivered to the Army's Northern Command has not been disclosed by the company. This move aligns with broader efforts to enhance operational readiness in challenging terrains and scenarios.
Advanced Drone Systems Engineered for Harsh Environments
InsideFPV specializes in developing drones tailored for GPS-denied zones and extreme environmental conditions. An FPV drone, as explained by the company, is an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) operated using specialized goggles that provide a live, real-time video feed from an onboard camera, offering pilots an immersive experience akin to being inside the drone.
Arth Chowdhary, CEO of InsideFPV, emphasized the robustness of their systems, stating, "Our kamikaze and FPV systems are engineered specifically for India's harshest deployment environments, functioning reliably in temperatures as low as -35°C."
The drones supplied to the Army are configured for kamikaze attacks, featuring waypoint control for automated navigation, a multi-step safety mechanism, and a detonation trigger. These capabilities are designed to ensure precision and reliability in critical missions.
Reflecting a Trend Towards Domestic Defence Manufacturing
The Rs 10 crore rapid-execution contract with InsideFPV is indicative of a larger trend where the government is increasingly favoring domestic manufacturers capable of delivering precision unmanned systems quickly and in volume. This approach not only strengthens India's self-reliance in defence but also supports the growth of the local defence industry.
