From Maoist to Mason: Arvind Hemla's Journey of Surrender and Skill Training
In a remarkable transformation, 22-year-old Arvind Hemla has shifted from a life of hardship and uncertainty in the forests of Bijapur to a stable future built through work and skill training. After surrendering in March 2025, he now works as a mason in neighboring Telangana, marking a decisive turn in his life.
A Childhood of Deprivation and Loss
Born into a poor rural family in Bijapur district, Arvind grew up amid severe deprivation and instability. He lost his father in 2009 and his mother in 2016, leaving him alone and vulnerable at a young age. These adverse conditions gradually drew him towards Maoist activities in his early teens, as poverty and lack of opportunities pushed him into a path of violence.
The Decision to Surrender
Arvind recounted his realization that the Maoist path offered only fear, uncertainty, and no real future. "Over time, I realized the path of violence offered only fear, uncertainty and no real future. I was on sentry duty for senior Maoist commanders, but I knew my time would also come to face the bullets. Hence, when I was contacted by local people of my village in March 2025, I chose to surrender," he said. This decision was a critical step towards rebuilding his life.
Rehabilitation and Skill Development
After surrendering, Arvind lived in a rehabilitation centre in Bijapur district in Bastar, where he received comprehensive training as a mason. He learned construction work, gaining practical skills that would help him reintegrate into society. This training has enabled him to earn Rs 600 per day, providing financial stability and a sense of purpose.
Rebuilding Life in the Mainstream
Arvind is now employed as a construction worker in Telangana's Mancherial district, which has helped him re-enter the mainstream. His journey from a former Maoist to a skilled mason highlights the importance of rehabilitation programs in offering alternatives to violence. This story serves as an inspiration for others in similar situations, demonstrating that with the right support and training, individuals can overcome past struggles and build a brighter future.
