Assam Ramps Up Border Security Measures Ahead of Crucial Assembly Elections
In preparation for the upcoming assembly elections, the Assam excise department has implemented comprehensive security arrangements at key border locations across the state. Authorities have established 30 dedicated check posts specifically along inter-state boundaries to monitor and prevent the illegal transportation of liquor and other restricted materials.
Multi-Layered Border Surveillance Strategy
The state government has significantly enhanced vigilance operations at all inter-state border entry and exit points, as well as along the international borders shared with Bangladesh and Bhutan. Assam shares inter-state boundaries with Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Tripura, and Nagaland, creating multiple potential entry points that require coordinated monitoring.
Chief Secretary Ravi Kota has issued explicit directives to enforcement agencies and district authorities to intensify surveillance measures at inter-district borders through continuous monitoring of all movement points. "Steps have been initiated to establish Naka Check Posts at all border entry points, along with the operationalisation of 63 designated entry and exit points," Kota confirmed during a security review meeting.
Comprehensive Security Coordination Framework
A robust multi-level coordination mechanism has been institutionalized involving the chief secretary's office, Director General of Police, and district administrations working in close partnership with counterparts in neighboring states. This framework is designed to ensure seamless information sharing, coordinated surveillance, and effective enforcement throughout the election period.
District Commissioners and Senior Superintendents of Police have received specific instructions to promptly address any localized tensions that may arise and to strengthen enforcement against electoral inducements including cash, liquor, and other materials. The objective is to maintain an incident-free election environment across all districts.
Substantial Force Deployment Plans
Security planning includes the deployment of approximately 800 companies of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) across various districts based on detailed vulnerability assessments. Kota has directed DCs and SSPs to ensure coordinated deployment and optimal utilization of these security forces to maximize their effectiveness.
During a comprehensive review meeting involving the Chief Secretary, DGP, DCs, and SSPs, Director General of Police Harmeet Singh emphasized the critical importance of strengthened district-level intelligence gathering. This approach requires close coordination among district administration, police departments, and grassroots government machinery to create a comprehensive security network.
The enhanced border security measures represent a proactive approach to election management, addressing both inter-state and international border concerns while establishing multiple layers of monitoring and enforcement. These preparations aim to create secure conditions for democratic participation while preventing illegal activities that could compromise electoral integrity.
