Assam Assembly Elections Record Robust 75.91% Voter Turnout by 3 PM

The single-phase Assam assembly elections are experiencing a highly spirited response from voters on a gloomy polling day this Thursday. The Election Commission of India has reported an impressive average turnout of 75.91% by 3 PM, indicating strong democratic participation across the state.

Steady Increase in Voter Participation Throughout the Day

The polling day commenced with a modest turnout of 17.87% by 9 AM, but queues at polling stations swelled rapidly as the morning progressed. By 11 AM, voter participation had more than doubled to 38.92%, demonstrating growing enthusiasm among the electorate. The momentum continued into early afternoon with turnout climbing to 59.63%, and by 3 PM, approximately three-fourths of eligible voters had already exercised their franchise.

High-Turnout Constituencies Show Rural Enthusiasm

Constituency-wise figures reveal a particularly strong rural push, with several areas reporting exceptional participation rates. Jaleshwar constituency emerged as the most enthusiastic with 86.61% turnout, followed closely by Mankachar (84.24%), Chamaria (84.43%), and Laharighat (84.28%). These constituencies, which have significant Muslim populations, saw voters turning out in droves despite humid weather conditions.

Other districts also reported steady participation, with Dhubri, Goalpara, and Barpeta recording turnout rates in the 76–82% range. The constituency-level data clearly indicates that rural areas are driving the overall high participation numbers in these Assam assembly elections.

Urban Areas Trail in Voter Mobilization

In contrast to the rural surge, Guwahati's urban constituencies continued to trail behind in voter turnout. Dispur registered 62.84% participation, while New Guwahati recorded 60.57% and Guwahati Central reported 64.01%. These figures represent a noticeable urban lag compared to the statewide average of 75.91%.

Regional Contrasts in Voter Enthusiasm

The hill districts of Assam showed more subdued participation compared to the valley regions. Diphu constituency recorded 63.18% turnout, while Howraghat reported 65.76%. These figures reflect lower enthusiasm in these areas compared to the valley surge, underscoring significant regional contrasts in voter mobilization across different parts of Assam.

The polling process is scheduled to conclude at 5 PM, with final turnout figures expected to be released after all votes are cast. The Election Commission has been monitoring the situation closely throughout the day to ensure smooth conduct of these crucial assembly elections.
