NEW DELHI: Leader of Opposition in the Delhi Assembly and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Atishi on Tuesday accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of failing to fulfill its election promise of providing Rs 2,500 per month to women in the national capital, as reported by news agency ANI.
Speaking at a press conference in Delhi, Atishi said that the 'Modi ki guarantee' announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi remained unimplemented even after the promised deadline had passed. She stated, “In January 2025, ahead of the Delhi elections, PM Narendra Modi had promised that on March 8, 2025, every woman in Delhi would receive Rs 2,500 in her account. He had called it 'Modi ki guarantee'... Modi ji, even March 8, 2026 has gone by, but the women of Delhi have not received even 25 paise in their accounts.”
Atishi further alleged that Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, while campaigning in West Bengal for elections, promised similar financial assistance to women there. She remarked, “She deceived the women of Delhi and got their votes on a false promise, but the women of Delhi are still asking when they will get the Rs 2,500.”
According to ANI, Atishi also accused the BJP of creating difficulties for women in the city by curtailing access to public services. She claimed that several Mohalla Clinics have been shut down and transport benefits have been altered. She said, “BJP left no stone unturned in troubling the women of Delhi. Women who could travel comfortably in DTC buses with free tickets are now queuing for the Pink Card. Women who received free medicines and treatment at Mohalla Clinics are now going from pillar to post because the BJP shut down 100-150 Mohalla Clinics. They are about to shut down the remaining ones as well. So, in the one-day session, we have just one question for the BJP: when will the Rs 2,500 come?”
Broader Implications
The allegations come amid heightened political tensions in the national capital, with the AAP and BJP trading barbs over governance and welfare schemes. The promise of Rs 2,500 per month for women was a key campaign plank for the BJP in the 2025 Delhi assembly elections, aimed at wooing female voters. However, the AAP claims that the BJP has failed to deliver on this commitment even after assuming power in Delhi.
Impact on Women's Welfare
Atishi highlighted that the closure of Mohalla Clinics and changes to the free bus travel scheme for women have added to the hardships faced by women in Delhi. She argued that these actions contradict the BJP's stated commitment to women's empowerment. The AAP leader urged the Delhi government to immediately implement the promised financial assistance and restore essential services.
