Bengaluru Deploys 32 Mobile Forensic Labs for Modern Crime Probes
Bengaluru: 32 Mobile Forensic Labs Launched for Crime Probes

Bengaluru has launched 32 mobile forensic laboratories to modernize crime investigation across Karnataka. The vehicles are self-sufficient, equipped with built-in generators for power backup, refrigerators to preserve sensitive biological samples, and comprehensive crime scene cordoning gear.

Self-Sufficient Crime Scene Units

Each mobile lab is designed to operate independently in the field, reducing reliance on stationary facilities. The built-in generators ensure continuous power for forensic equipment, while refrigerators maintain the integrity of biological evidence such as blood, tissue, and DNA samples. The cordoning gear allows officers to secure crime scenes effectively.

Impact on Investigation Speed

According to a senior police official, the mobile labs are expected to reduce evidence processing time by up to 40%. Previously, forensic teams had to transport samples to central labs, causing delays. Now, preliminary analysis can be conducted on-site, enabling faster leads in critical cases.

“These units will be deployed across high-crime districts and during major events. They bring the lab to the crime scene, which is a game-changer for our investigative capabilities,” said the official.

Technical Specifications and Training

The labs are mounted on custom-built vans, each staffed with a forensic expert and a technician. They carry equipment for fingerprint analysis, DNA extraction, and digital evidence collection. Over 100 forensic personnel have undergone specialized training to operate these units.

The initiative is part of a broader push by the Karnataka government to upgrade forensic infrastructure. The state allocated ₹50 crore for the project, which includes maintenance and training costs for the next five years.

Future Expansion Plans

Police Commissioner B. Dayananda stated that the success of this pilot could lead to an additional 20 labs by 2027. “We are committed to leveraging technology to solve crimes efficiently. These mobile labs are a significant step toward that goal,” he said.
