Bengaluru Man Killed Parents Over Startup Funds, Mobile Number

A 33-year-old software engineer, Rohan Chandra, was arrested for allegedly stabbing his parents to death in their villa in Vignan Nagar, Bengaluru, in February. The police have filed a chargesheet revealing the motives behind the brutal murder.

Mental Health Evaluation

Initially, there were suspicions that Rohan might be schizophrenic, as his mother Shyamala Bhat had told neighbors he suffered from anxiety and schizophrenia. He was taken to Nimhans for observation. However, after a week, doctors declared him fit for interrogation, with no signs of stress, anxiety, or schizophrenia.

Motive for the Crime

According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Whitefield) Saidulu Adavath, Rohan was upset over two issues. First, his parents refused to give him Rs 10 lakh to invest in a startup he wanted to launch after completing a master's in artificial intelligence in the US. They insisted he get a job instead. Second, his father Naveen Chandra Bhat, a retired Navy captain, denied Rohan's request to port his mobile number from Jio to Airtel.

On February 11, a heated argument broke out between Rohan and his parents, which escalated into the fatal stabbing. A neighbor, Dr. Madhavi Nair, witnessed the attack and rushed the couple to Manipal Hospital, but they were declared brought dead.

Chargesheet Details

The chargesheet, spanning around 500 pages, includes statements from about 40 witnesses and forensic reports. The forensic evidence confirmed that the blood stains on Rohan matched his parents, establishing him as the killer.

Police have now produced Rohan before the court, and the investigation is complete.
