Bihar's Intensive Border Drive Yields Major Security and Development Results
An extensive and intensive drive to eliminate illegal encroachments from the India-Nepal border belt has produced significant outcomes across Bihar's frontier districts. District administrations have reported large-scale demolition of unlawful structures located in 'No Man's Land' and within 15 kilometers of the international boundary. This initiative forms a crucial part of a broader, concerted push to strengthen border management and enhance national security measures in the region.
Review Meeting Highlights Progress and Coordination
The progress report was formally presented during a comprehensive review meeting chaired by Chief Secretary Pratyaya Amrit. District magistrates from East Champaran, West Champaran, Madhubani, Sitamarhi, Kishanganj, Supaul, and Araria provided detailed updates on border security and ongoing development works. According to the presentations, Madhubani district has successfully removed all 186 identified illegal structures, while Kishanganj cleared all 34 identified encroachments over the past month. In West Champaran, authorities have demolished 261 out of 272 encroachments, with active coordination underway with Nepali authorities regarding the remaining cases to ensure complete resolution.
Crime Control and Counterfeit Currency Crackdown
The review meeting also highlighted substantial progress in crime control and decisive action against Fake Indian Currency Notes. In East Champaran, law enforcement recently arrested 10 accused individuals and seized counterfeit currency with a face value of Rs 18,500 in Indian notes and Rs 25 lakh in Nepali notes. Similarly, in Sitamarhi, authorities recovered Rs 49 lakh in Nepali counterfeit notes and Rs 20,100 in Indian counterfeit notes. On the cyber crime enforcement front, the Sitamarhi administration facilitated refunds exceeding Rs 11.66 lakh in January alone. Furthermore, in Madhubani and Araria, inter-state gangs involved in preparing fake identity cards and Aadhaar cards were successfully busted, leading to multiple arrests and disrupting illicit networks.
Border Pillar Maintenance and Technological Upgrades
Border pillar maintenance and verification are being systematically carried out through modern technology and joint surveys. Regular monitoring is currently underway for 1,237 pillars in East Champaran and 358 pillars in Madhubani to ensure their integrity and proper placement. In Kishanganj and Sitamarhi, field survey teams are actively taking action to repair damaged or missing pillars. Notably, in Supaul district, repair work on all damaged pillars has been fully completed, marking a significant milestone in border infrastructure upkeep.
Enhanced Surveillance Against Illegal Infiltration
During the meeting, it was informed that security agencies are maintaining rigorous surveillance against illegal infiltration by foreign nationals. Several arrests have been made involving citizens from Uzbekistan, Bangladesh, China, and America, underscoring the heightened vigilance and proactive measures being implemented to secure the border region from unauthorized entries.
Development Initiatives Under Vibrant Village Programme
On the development front, hundreds of villages in the border region have been strategically selected under the Vibrant Village Programme-II. In Madhubani, detailed project reports are being meticulously prepared for 253 development schemes covering 36 villages, while the Government of India has added 250 more villages to the program. In Sitamarhi, modern facilities including digital libraries and model agricultural farms are being developed across four blocks at a cost of Rs 24 crore. Kishanganj has received a substantial allocation of Rs 112 crore under this transformative program, aimed at boosting local infrastructure and community welfare.
Promotion of Agriculture and Horticulture Activities
The review further noted that agriculture and horticulture-based economic activities are being actively promoted in border districts with a special focus on processing high-value crops. Emphasis is being placed on the processing of dragon fruit, pineapple, and tea to enhance local livelihoods, create employment opportunities, and foster sustainable economic growth in these strategically important areas.
