Election Commission Announces Bypoll for Bihar Legislative Council Seat
The Election Commission of India officially declared on Thursday that a byelection for the Bihar legislative council seat from the Bhojpur-cum-Buxar Local Authorities’ Constituency will be conducted on May 12. This announcement sets in motion a significant electoral process in the state, with the Model Code of Conduct taking immediate effect across the constituency, which spans two districts.
Vacancy and Election Schedule Details
The by-election was necessitated due to a vacancy created on November 16 last year, following the resignation of JD(U) MLC Radha Charan Sah. Sah resigned after being elected to the state assembly from the Sandesh constituency in the 2025 elections, leaving the legislative council seat open.
In an official notification issued by Election Commission under secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh, the detailed schedule for the bypoll was outlined:
- The formal notification for the by-election will be issued on April 16.
- Candidates can file their nominations until April 23.
- Scrutiny of nomination papers is scheduled for April 24.
- The final date for withdrawal of candidature has been fixed for April 27.
Voting will be held on May 12 from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, with the counting of votes set for May 14. The entire election process is expected to be completed by May 15, ensuring a swift and organized conclusion to the electoral exercise.
Political Implications and Preparations
This announcement has sparked considerable political activity, as parties gear up to field candidates for the closely watched contest in the Bhojpur-cum-Buxar Local Authorities’ Constituency. The Model Code of Conduct, which governs campaign conduct and electoral behavior, is now in force, aiming to maintain fairness and integrity throughout the process.
The by-election is poised to be a key test for regional and national parties in Bihar, reflecting broader political dynamics in the state. With the schedule now public, political strategists and candidates are expected to intensify their outreach efforts in the coming weeks.
