BJD's Rajya Sabha Leader Sasmit Patra Steps Down Amid Internal Dissent
In a significant political development, Rajya Sabha member Sasmit Patra resigned as the parliamentary party leader of the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) on Wednesday. This move comes amidst growing dissent within the party, highlighting internal tensions that have been simmering for some time.
Resignation Follows MPs' Demand for Removal
The resignation was submitted to BJD president Naveen Patnaik, just a day after four BJD MPs wrote a letter seeking Patra's removal from the leadership position. Party insiders revealed that the MPs expressed resentment against his leadership, which ultimately led to his decision to step down. Sasmit Patra had held this influential role since 2022, serving as a key spokesperson for the BJD in Delhi.
Potential Successors and Leadership Dynamics
With Patra's resignation, the BJD is now considering appointing a new floor leader. Sources indicate that Santrupt Misra or Manas Mangaraj are frontrunners for the position, as both are believed to enjoy the confidence of the party leadership. The BJD currently has six members in the Rajya Sabha, including Subhashish Khuntia, Sulata Deo, and Debashish Samantaray.
Controversies and Leadership Criticisms
Patra, known for his articulate and suave demeanor, had been effectively representing the BJD's views in national politics. However, he faced criticism for being "insufficiently proactive" during a recent controversy involving BJP MP Nishikant Dubey. Dubey made allegedly insulting remarks linking Biju Patnaik with the CIA on March 27, but Patra's response came a day later on March 28, when he resigned from a parliamentary panel chaired by Dubey.
Despite attempts to reach him for comments, Sasmit Patra did not respond to calls and messages, adding to the speculation surrounding his resignation.
Underlying Issues and Party Divisions
Sources also pointed to deeper differences among BJD MPs, particularly following the party's handling of the Waqf bill in the Rajya Sabha last year. Initially, the BJD announced opposition to the legislation, but later left it to individual members' conscience, causing confusion and dissent within the ranks. This incident, coupled with the recent leadership criticisms, has exacerbated internal party divisions.
Naveen Patnaik now holds two key letters: one from the MPs seeking Patra's removal and another conveying his resignation. A decision on the matter is expected soon, as the party navigates this period of transition and seeks to maintain unity ahead of future political challenges.
