The Bharatiya Janata Party's central election committee convened at Prime Minister Narendra Modi's residence on Sunday to finalize candidate names for the upcoming elections to 24 Rajya Sabha seats and legislative council polls in several states. The meeting, held a day before the nomination filing process begins, included Union Ministers Amit Shah and Rajnath Singh, along with BJP President Nitin Nabin.
Candidate List for Maharashtra MLC Elections
Following the meeting, the BJP released a list of 10 candidates for the Maharashtra Legislative Council elections, where 16 seats are up for grabs. This announcement came just a day before the nomination deadline. It is unusual for the central election committee to hold a physical meeting specifically for Rajya Sabha or MLC elections, suggesting that top party leaders may have also discussed other critical political issues, including a potential overhaul of the party's national office-bearer team.
Alliance Disputes in Maharashtra
The meeting may have been prompted by ongoing tensions between the state BJP leadership and its Maharashtra allies, the Shiv Sena and the Nationalist Congress Party, over the distribution of MLC seats. Shiv Sena President and Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde had previously raised the matter with Amit Shah as the deadlock persisted. The central committee's intervention could be aimed at resolving these differences ahead of the polls.
Rajya Sabha Seats Across States
The 24 Rajya Sabha seats up for election are distributed across multiple states: Andhra Pradesh (4), Gujarat (4), Karnataka (4), Madhya Pradesh (3), Rajasthan (3), Jharkhand (2), and one vacancy each in four northeastern states—Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, and Mizoram. The elections are crucial for the BJP as it seeks to strengthen its position in the upper house of Parliament.
