A Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) functionary has lodged a formal complaint against former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and a Trinamool Congress (TMC) legislator, alleging misuse of annual Eid congregations held on Red Road in central Kolkata during her tenure in office. The complaint claims that these gatherings were exploited for political purposes, which allegedly contravenes Islamic principles.
Details of the Complaint
BJP's Nazia Elahi Khan has asserted that Mamata Banerjee's participation in these events violated Quranic and Sharia norms, which restrict such prayer congregations exclusively to males. The complaint also names Javed Ahmed Khan, the TMC legislator who serves as president of the Muslim Khilafat Committee, the organization responsible for organizing the Eid prayers.
Allegations of Political Misuse
The complaint alleges that political activities conducted during the religious congregation have deeply hurt the religious sentiments of the Muslim community. It further claims that such actions have tarnished the image of Islam and fostered communal divisions within the state. The BJP functionary has called for a thorough investigation into the matter.
This development adds to the ongoing political tensions in West Bengal, where religious events have occasionally become flashpoints for controversy. The complaint underscores the delicate balance between religious practices and political expressions in the region.
