BJP Councillor Files Defamation Complaint Over AI-Generated Fake Video
A sitting BJP councillor in Surat has taken legal action against an Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate, alleging the circulation of a fabricated AI-generated video designed to tarnish his reputation. The complaint was formally lodged at the Godadara police station, marking a significant escalation in local political tensions.
Details of the Alleged Defamation
Amit Singh Rajput, who currently serves as a councillor from Ward-26 (Godadara-Dindoli) of the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) and previously held a leadership role within the BJP in the civic body, claims that the accused individual created and disseminated a malicious video on social media platforms. According to Rajput's complaint filed on Saturday, he discovered an AI-generated video featuring a person who closely resembles him, depicted in handcuffs.
The accused, identified as Shravan Joshi, allegedly utilized Rajput's images and connected them with historical news reports to falsely imply his involvement in grave criminal activities, including murder, abduction, and molestation. The video was accompanied by scripted audio, which Rajput asserts was specifically crafted to defame his character and undermine his political standing.
Police Investigation and Legal Action
Law enforcement authorities have confirmed that the video gained substantial traction on social media, accumulating nearly 2,900 likes and over 268 shares on Facebook by Sunday evening. In response to the complaint, the Godadara police registered a First Information Report (FIR) against Shravan Joshi.
The charges have been filed under Sections 356(2) and 356(3) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which pertain to defamation, along with Section 66-C of the Information Technology Act, addressing identity theft and cheating by personation using computer resources. Notably, Joshi was officially declared the AAP candidate for Ward-26 in the upcoming SMC elections just hours after the FIR was registered. This ward is currently represented by Rajput, adding a layer of political rivalry to the case.
Broader Context of Political Tensions
This incident occurs against a backdrop of heightened political friction in Surat. Last week, five separate FIRs were filed against 18 AAP workers for allegedly defaming the BJP through the use of forged documents. These cases were initiated after posters criticizing BJP policies appeared in various localities, including Dindoli, Puna, Katargam, Utran, and Pandesara.
The ongoing confrontations highlight the intensifying competition between political parties as municipal elections approach, with digital tools like AI-generated content becoming new battlegrounds for defamation and misinformation campaigns.
