BJP Condemns Kharge's Alleged 'Illiterate' Remark, Vows Electoral Response in Gujarat
The Vadodara city unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has strongly criticized alleged remarks by Congress national president Mallikarjun Kharge, where he reportedly referred to the people of Gujarat as "illiterate." The BJP asserted that the state's voters will deliver a befitting reply in the upcoming local body elections, highlighting the issue as a matter of regional pride and respect.
BJP Leaders Highlight Gujarat's Legacy and Demand Accountability
Vadodara city BJP president Jayprakash Soni responded forcefully, emphasizing Gujarat's rich historical contributions. He noted that the state has produced great leaders such as Mahatma Gandhi, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, and Morarji Desai, who played pivotal roles in India's freedom struggle and nation-building. Soni argued that such comments undermine the legacy and intelligence of Gujaratis, calling them unacceptable and disrespectful.
In a significant development, Kharge later apologized for the remarks in a social media post on Tuesday. However, the BJP has not been placated and has planned protests across Gujarat to express their discontent and mobilize public opinion against what they perceive as an insult to the state's populace.
Political Reactions and Campaign Strategies
Vadodara MP and state BJP youth president Dr. Hemang Joshi also reacted on social media, stating that every Gujarati would respond to these comments, indicating a widespread backlash from the community. The BJP has leveraged this incident to reinforce their connection with local voters, portraying themselves as defenders of Gujarat's honor.
A hoarding put up in Vadodara further targeted the Congress, pointing out that former prime minister Indira Gandhi's husband, Feroze Gandhi, was a Gujarati. This move aims to highlight historical ties and counter the narrative of illiteracy, suggesting that such remarks are hypocritical given the Congress's own connections to the state.
BJP's Stance on Election Issues and Future Actions
Responding to queries, Soni clarified that the BJP does not intend to make this remark an election issue proactively. However, he warned that if such statements continue, the party will be compelled to respond. "We do not want to take any mileage from this, but if such issues are raised repeatedly, what are we expected to do?" he said, indicating a strategic approach to balance restraint with readiness for political engagement.
This incident has sparked a heated political debate in Gujarat, with the BJP using it to galvanize support ahead of the local body elections. The controversy underscores the sensitivity of regional identity in Indian politics and the potential for such remarks to influence voter sentiment. As protests unfold, the focus remains on how this will impact the electoral landscape and inter-party dynamics in the state.
