The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has clarified that Prabhavathi, the accused in a temple donation box theft case in Nenmara, Palakkad, is no longer associated with the party. The statement comes amid attempts to link the party to the incident.
Party's Clarification on Prabhavathi's Status
BJP Nenmara constituency president L Nirmal Kumar confirmed that Prabhavathi had contested the 2020 local body elections as a BJP candidate from ward 19 of Nenmara grama panchayat. However, she was expelled from the party in 2023 after being named as an accused in a fraud case involving the pledging of imitation jewellery.
Kumar emphasized that Prabhavathi is not a member of the BJP or any of its affiliated organizations at present. The party functionary also alleged that attempts were being made to link the party to the theft case and said such claims were misleading.
Strict Action Against Wrongdoers
The BJP leader added that the party takes strict action against those involved in activities that go against its principles. The party maintains a zero-tolerance policy towards any criminal or unethical behavior by its members or former members.
Arrest and Theft Case Details
Prabhavathi was arrested on Wednesday in connection with the theft of money from the donation box of the Mariamman temple at Puzhakkalthara. The theft had sparked outrage among local devotees and temple authorities.
The incident has drawn attention to the background of the accused and the party's response. The BJP's swift distancing from Prabhavathi underscores its efforts to avoid any reputational damage from the case.
