A controversy erupted in Madhya Pradesh's Shivpuri district on Sunday after BJP MLA Pritam Lodhi garlanded a photograph of former Chambal dacoit Rambabu Gadariya during a programme held to mark the birth anniversary of Ahilyabai Holkar.
Event Details
The event was organised by the Pal-Baghel community in Pichhore town of Shivpuri district. Photographs of both Ahilyabai Holkar and Rambabu Gadariya were placed side by side on the stage. Pichhore MLA Pritam Lodhi attended as the chief guest and garlanded both images, triggering sharp criticism from opposition leaders and sections of the public.
Who Was Ahilyabai Holkar?
Ahilyabai Holkar is remembered for her administrative reforms and public welfare works in the 18th century. She is widely respected across Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra. Her birth anniversary programmes are usually marked with tributes highlighting her legacy in governance and philanthropy.
The Controversial Act
The inclusion and garlanding of Rambabu Gadariya's photograph — a former Chambal dacoit — became the central point of controversy. Lodhi reportedly described Gadariya as his "old associate" and said he shared a close personal bond with him.
Addressing the gathering, the MLA said Gadariya had been "a companion in happiness and sorrow" and claimed that difficult circumstances pushed him into crime. He added that many individuals labeled as criminals were also shaped by their environment, and society should understand their life conditions.
Lodhi also said he had known Gadariya closely, including meeting him in jail and in forest areas, and reiterated support for his family.
Political Reactions
The remarks and the act of honouring Gadariya alongside Ahilyabai Holkar drew criticism from several quarters. Political opponents and community members questioned the appropriateness of placing a figure associated with crime on the same platform as one of India's most revered historical icons.
Congress local unit president Sahab Singh Kushwah termed the act condemnable, saying it sent a wrong message. He asked what message was being conveyed by honouring a person associated with criminal activities at a programme meant to celebrate a respected historical figure.
The incident has since sparked a wider political debate in the region over public symbolism, messaging, and the individuals being honoured at community events.
