BJP Initiates Seat Swap Talks with AIADMK Amid Growing Internal Dissatisfaction
In a significant political development, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has formally reached out to its ally, the AIADMK, seeking a swap of five constituencies in Tamil Nadu. This move aims to accommodate key BJP leaders, including state president K Annamalai, M Venkatesan, K T Raghavan, and K Vasantha Rajan, amidst escalating unease within the party over the current seat allocation framework.
Protests Erupt as Cadres Question Constituency Choices
Protests have been reported in several locations, including T Nagar, Coimbatore, and Palani, with BJP cadres openly questioning the choice of constituencies allotted to the party. Party sources indicate that Vasantha Rajan is being considered for Kinathukadavu in Coimbatore district, a seat currently held by AIADMK MLA S Damodharan. A senior BJP leader stated, "We have asked for Chengalpet for K T Raghavan, and Egmore for writer Venkatesan." Notably, in all these constituencies, the DMK has already fielded its candidates, adding to the BJP's challenges.
Annamalai's Candidacy and Ongoing Negotiations
Discussions are actively underway to secure a suitable constituency for K Annamalai, with potential locations being considered in Coimbatore, Karur, or elsewhere. Annamalai was previously expected to contest from Singanallur or Kavundampalayam in Coimbatore, or Aravakurichi in Karur, but none of these seats were allotted to the BJP in its seat-sharing arrangement with the AIADMK. A state-level BJP functionary revealed, "Talks are ongoing, and we may know the decision by Sunday how many seats will be swapped."
Criticism Over Allocation and DMK Strongholds
The current allocation has triggered sharp criticism within BJP circles, with concerns that several DMK strongholds have been assigned to the party. This forces BJP candidates to take on as many as 13 DMK ministers, including prominent figures like E V Velu and Anitha Radhakrishnan, in what are perceived as uphill battles.
AIADMK's Internal Dynamics and District-Wise Concerns
The unease is not limited to the BJP alone. Sources within the AIADMK have confirmed internal representations seeking seat swaps with the BJP. A proposal has been conveyed through Viralimalai MLA and former minister C Vijayabaskar, indicating a mutual interest in reevaluating the allocations.
The distribution of seats has also raised questions over district-wise allocation strategies. For instance, the BJP has been allotted three seats in Pudukkottai district, while in Coimbatore, where the party is seen to have stronger electoral prospects, it has secured only one seat. While Pudukkottai was expected to go to the BJP following Union Home Minister Amit Shah's visit in January for the final leg of Nagenthran's statewide campaign, the allocation of Aranthangi and Gandarvakottai (reserved) constituencies came as a surprise to many.
Protests Within AIADMK Ranks
On Saturday evening, a section of AIADMK functionaries from Aranthangi gathered outside Edappadi K Palaniswami's residence in Chennai to protest the seat allocations. A functionary argued, "We have a better chance of winning in both Aranthangi and Gandarvakottai constituencies as we have already won there in 2011 and 2016 elections."
Meanwhile, the AIADMK is yet to announce its candidate for Alangudi due to a stalemate over selecting a nominee that matches local community equations, further complicating the alliance's electoral preparations.
