A 28-year-old functionary of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) from Ayodhya, who was attacked following an alleged dispute over sharing cigarettes on May 26, succumbed to his injuries at a hospital in Lucknow on Friday. Shivam Singh, a district committee member of the BJYM from Dhaurahra in Ayodhya district, was assaulted with bricks and stones by a group of youths in Lucknow's Gomti Nagar area.
Incident Details
According to police, the incident occurred on May 26 outside a bar in Vibhuti Khand, where Singh had arrived with friends for a late-night party. The altercation began at a roadside kiosk where Singh was purchasing cigarettes. Three youths on a motorcycle approached him and asked for cigarettes. Singh gave them one, but they demanded more, leading to a heated argument. Both sides eventually left the spot.
Attack and Death
Police said the bikers later cornered Singh near Kathauta lake, a few kilometres from the site of the initial argument, and attacked him with bricks and stones. Singh sustained severe head injuries and collapsed. Passersby found him unconscious and alerted authorities. He was rushed to a hospital, where he died during treatment on Friday night.
Police Action
Police have registered a murder case and arrested three accused: Shantanu Rawat, Honey Tiwari, and Vivek Singh. DCP East Deeksha Sharma stated that authorities are examining CCTV footage from the area to reconstruct the sequence of events. Multiple teams have been formed to trace any remaining accused. Singh's family has expressed dissatisfaction with the investigation.
