BJP Releases Comprehensive Manifesto for Puducherry Assembly Elections
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Sunday unveiled its detailed election manifesto for the upcoming Puducherry assembly elections, presenting a wide array of welfare measures targeting women, students, fishermen, and local residents. The party's promises include free LPG cylinders during major festivals, electric scooters for meritorious female students, significant rail infrastructure upgrades, and substantial local reservation in government jobs.
Festival Relief and Educational Support Initiatives
Puducherry BJP president V P Ramalingam announced that the party will provide one free LPG cylinder during Pongal and another during Vinayagar Chaturthi to every household in the Union Territory. This measure aims to ensure that families can celebrate these important festivals without disruption from fuel shortages or financial constraints.
In a significant move to support female education, the BJP has proposed the 'Anbu Thangai' scheme that will provide free electric scooters to Class XII girls who achieve high marks in public examinations. "To ease transportation difficulties for girl students and encourage them to pursue higher education, we will implement this important initiative," Ramalingam stated during the manifesto release event.
Approximately 3,000 students are expected to benefit from this scheme annually. Party sources indicated that the scooters will likely be low-speed models equipped with 1.2-kWh batteries offering a range of about 60 kilometers. These vehicles typically do not require a driving license under current regulations, making them accessible to young students.
Major Transportation and Infrastructure Upgrades
The BJP manifesto outlines substantial improvements to Puducherry's transportation network, including:
- A new Vande Metro service connecting Chennai and Puducherry
- A Vande Bharat train link to Mysuru
- Double broad-gauge railway lines in both Puducherry and Karaikal regions
- Renaming of Puducherry railway station after the renowned Tamil poet Subramania Bharati
Additionally, the party promises to modernize public transport with electric buses, upgrade existing bus depots, improve connectivity to temple areas, and introduce additional Saturday services across the region to enhance mobility for residents.
Local Reservation and Employment Guarantees
In a major announcement addressing local employment concerns, Ramalingam declared: "We will ensure priority for Puducherry youth by working with the Union government to provide 60% local reservation in Group C and Group D government jobs and 20% reservation for Puducherry students in all Union Territory central universities."
This reservation policy represents a significant commitment to protecting local interests and ensuring that Puducherry residents receive preferential consideration in government employment opportunities and higher education admissions.
Leadership Campaign and Political Statements
Later in the evening, BJP's new national president Nitin Nabin campaigned for National Democratic Alliance (NDA) candidates in Puducherry, participating in a roadshow in Thirunallur. "We assure that the double-engine government, with Modi's guarantee, will fulfil all the poll announcements," Nabin told reporters following the campaign event.
Nabin also criticized Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, stating: "Kharge has insulted Modi in the past. Such statements reflect Congress's mindset and demonstrate why the party is facing an electoral decline." These remarks highlight the ongoing political tensions between the BJP and Congress as election campaigning intensifies in the Union Territory.
