Campaigning Concludes in Three Key Regions Ahead of Crucial Assembly Elections

The intense and high-voltage election campaigns in the states of Assam and Kerala, along with the Union Territory of Puducherry, officially drew to a close on Tuesday evening. All major political parties executed a final, vigorous show of strength as they prepared for voting scheduled for April 9. For the 299 assembly seats across these two states and one union territory, campaigning reached a fever pitch with national leaders crisscrossing the regions.

National Heavyweights Deployed for Final Push

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leveraged its top leadership, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and several chief ministers from BJP-ruled states, to canvass for votes. Simultaneously, the Congress party also marshaled its most prominent figures, putting the full weight of its national leadership behind its candidates in a bid to enhance its electoral prospects.

Kerala: A Historic Three-Way Contest Emerges

Kerala, recently rechristened Keralam in acknowledgment of its cultural heritage, is witnessing a fascinating electoral dynamic. The state, traditionally a bipolar arena, is now shaping up for a potential trifecta involving the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF), the opposition United Democratic Front (UDF), and the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) as an ambitious third front.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan's LDF is campaigning on its record of welfare schemes, seeking an unprecedented third consecutive term. The Congress-led UDF, meanwhile, is framing the election around promises of change and a critique of the incumbent government's governance and financial management. Top Congress leaders, including Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, intensified their engagements, underscoring Kerala's strategic importance in the national opposition's blueprint.

The BJP, under the leadership of PM Modi, is waging an aggressive campaign aimed at disrupting Kerala's long-standing two-party system. The party hopes to make incremental gains that could prove decisive in tightly contested constituencies. A total of 2.71 crore voters are eligible to cast their ballots, including over 2.42 lakh overseas voters. The fate of 883 candidates vying for 140 seats will be decided. In the 2021 assembly polls, the LDF secured a strong majority with 97 seats, while the UDF won 41.

Assam: A Direct BJP vs Congress Confrontation

The Assam assembly elections are crystallizing into a direct contest between the ruling BJP and the principal opposition, the Congress. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is seeking a "hat-trick" term for his party, while Congress, led by Gaurav Gogoi, is fighting to regain relevance in a state that was once its bastion.

The BJP's campaign focuses on its governance record, welfare outreach, and the "jati, mati, bheti" (community, land, hearth) plank, aiming to secure a majority on its own. Congress is attempting a reset through new leadership and strategic alliances to capitalize on potential anti-incumbency and build social coalitions. The recent delimitation exercise has added a layer of complexity, redrawing constituency boundaries and altering electoral calculations, particularly in minority-dominated seats.

Voter concerns regarding governance, employment, and inflation could become pivotal. However, a fragmented opposition landscape remains a significant advantage for the BJP. The issue of illegal migration continues to dominate discourse, with the BJP's firm stance likely appealing to a substantial voter base. A total electorate of over 2.5 crore will decide the fate of 722 candidates across 126 constituencies. In 2021, the NDA alliance won 76 seats, with the BJP alone securing 60.

Puducherry: NDA Aims for Second Term Against Congress-DMK Alliance

Similar to Assam, the Puducherry polls present a direct fight between the ruling National Democratic Alliance (comprising the All India NR Congress and BJP) and the opposition Congress-DMK alliance. Chief Minister N. Rangasamy, heading the AINRC, is seeking a second consecutive term, banking on his pro-people image.

The Congress and DMK, after finalizing a last-minute seat-sharing agreement, are campaigning to reclaim power. Both major alliances benefit from extensive organizational networks across the Union Territory. A wildcard in the race is actor-turned-politician Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), which initially announced candidates for all 30 seats before aligning with an independent legislator's newly formed party.

Puducherry's 33-member legislative assembly includes 30 elected seats. Voting will occur on April 9, with counting scheduled for May 4 alongside several other states. In the 2021 polls, the AINRC-BJP alliance secured 16 out of 30 seats.

The conclusion of campaigning sets the stage for a decisive phase as millions of voters prepare to exercise their franchise, determining the political trajectory of these crucial regions.
