Central Forces to Stay in West Bengal for Seven More Days

Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced on Sunday that central forces will remain deployed in West Bengal for seven more days after the conclusion of the assembly elections, even if the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) comes to power. Speaking at a road show in Behala, where voting is scheduled for the second and final phase on April 29, Shah emphasized the central government's commitment to maintaining law and order in the state.

Addressing a large gathering, Shah stated, "Central forces will stay in West Bengal for seven more days, irrespective of which party forms the government. This is to ensure that the democratic process is completed smoothly and that no untoward incidents occur." He further added that the central government is vigilant about the security situation in the state.

Election Context

The West Bengal Assembly Elections 2026 are being held in two phases, with the final phase on April 29. The first phase saw a high voter turnout, and security has been a major concern throughout the campaign period. The presence of central forces has been a contentious issue, with opposition parties accusing the BJP-led central government of deploying forces to influence the election outcome.

Shah's statement comes amid allegations of political violence and intimidation in several constituencies. The Home Minister reiterated that the central forces are neutral and are deployed solely to assist the state administration in conducting free and fair elections.

Political Reactions

The announcement has drawn mixed reactions from political parties. The ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) criticized the decision, calling it an attempt to undermine the state's autonomy. TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh said, "The central government is using the Election Commission as a tool to impose its will on West Bengal. The state police is fully capable of maintaining law and order."

On the other hand, the BJP welcomed the move, with state BJP president Sukanta Majumdar stating, "The presence of central forces ensures that voters can cast their ballots without fear. We support the Home Minister's decision to keep them deployed until the situation stabilizes."

Security Arrangements

Security has been tightened across the state ahead of the final phase of polling. Additional central forces have been deployed in sensitive areas, and the Election Commission has directed that all polling stations be equipped with adequate security measures. The state administration has assured that all necessary steps are being taken to ensure a peaceful voting process.

Shah's road show in Behala was part of the BJP's final campaign push in the state. The party is hoping to make significant gains in the elections, particularly in urban and semi-urban areas. The Home Minister urged voters to support the BJP, promising development and good governance.
