Viral Video of Chatra Officer Beating Men Triggers Widespread Debate
A purported video that went viral on social media on Sunday has ignited a fierce debate over the public conduct of government officials in Chatra, Jharkhand. The footage, reportedly captured during the Itkhori Mahotsav on February 20, shows Itkhori Circle Officer Savita Singh engaged in a physical altercation with two men, allegedly beating them with a stick and using abusive language.
Details of the Viral Incident and Subsequent Arrests
In the widely circulated video, Savita Singh is seen assaulting Nitish Kumar Dangi of Itkhori and Aman Kumar Sinha of Paroka village. The confrontation escalates as two police personnel attempt to push one of the men into a police vehicle, while Singh strikes him from behind with a stick. Following the incident, an FIR was registered against Dangi and Sinha for allegedly creating a ruckus and misbehaving with the officer, leading to their arrest on February 21.
Savita Singh defended her actions, claiming the men were intoxicated and obstructed her vehicle while making objectionable remarks. "They threw juice on me as I stepped out of my vehicle," she stated, justifying the use of force. However, relatives of the accused have presented a contrasting narrative, alleging the altercation stemmed from a land mutation case. They have filed a complaint in the court of the chief judicial magistrate in Chatra against Singh, seeking legal recourse.
Political Reactions and Calls for Administrative Action
The video's emergence has drawn significant political attention, with former chief minister and leader of opposition Babulal Marandi demanding immediate action. "Officials holding administrative positions are expected to act with restraint, sensitivity, and strictly within the framework of law," Marandi wrote on a social media platform. He urged Chatra Deputy Commissioner Kirtishiree G to suspend Singh and register an FIR against her, highlighting concerns over accountability.
Public discourse has centered on whether government officials have the authority to use abusive language or physical force in such situations, especially when police personnel were reportedly present at the scene. Critics argue that such conduct undermines public trust and legal protocols.
Current Status and Ongoing Investigations
As of now, the district administration has not issued any official statement regarding the viral video or the allegations against Savita Singh. The lack of response has fueled further speculation and calls for transparency. The incident underscores broader issues of official behavior and enforcement in public settings, with many awaiting disciplinary measures or clarifications from authorities.
The case continues to evolve, with legal proceedings initiated by the accused's relatives and mounting pressure from political figures. This episode serves as a stark reminder of the scrutiny faced by public officials and the need for adherence to lawful conduct in all interactions.
