Political Tensions Erupt in Kerala Over Alleged Voter Bribery

Thrissur district witnessed significant political unrest on Sunday as Congress workers staged vehement protests in Vadanappally, located within the Manalur constituency. The demonstrations centered on allegations that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was orchestrating a large-scale distribution of food kits to influence voters ahead of the elections.

Congress Alleges Massive Kit Preparation Operation

The protests were spearheaded by T N Prathapan, the United Democratic Front (UDF) candidate for Manalur. Congress activists claimed that approximately 4,000 food kits were being assembled in a local godown at Vadanappally. They pointed out that the godown owner resided on the premises, adding to their suspicions. The presence of BJP leaders, including state vice-president Devan, at the owner's house was deemed particularly questionable.

Protesters asserted that Devan had arrived specifically to oversee the distribution of these kits. When confronted, godown staff reportedly stated the kits were intended for a non-governmental organization (NGO). However, subsequent inquiries revealed that the NGO's office-bearers had no knowledge of such an arrangement, further fueling the controversy.

Political Fronts Exchange Accusations and Mobilize Support

In response, BJP leaders, including Devan, dismissed the allegations as baseless. They contended that the UDF and the Left Democratic Front (LDF) were fabricating these claims due to fears of an impending electoral defeat. Meanwhile, LDF leaders, led by constituency candidate C Ravindranath, arrived at the scene and condemned the alleged kit distribution as highly objectionable. They pledged to organize robust protests but departed after a brief period, leaving UDF workers to continue the agitation.

The UDF activists, under Prathapan's leadership, initiated a blockade in front of the godown, effectively trapping Devan and other BJP leaders inside. Their demands were clear: the immediate seizure of the food kits and the preventive detention of the godown owner, the individual who ordered the kits, and Devan. Simultaneously, BJP supporters gathered at the location, chanting slogans in support of their party leaders, leading to sporadic clashes between the two groups.

Police and Election Authorities Intervene to Restore Order

The escalating situation prompted the arrival of police personnel, election officials, and even a battalion of the Sashastra Seema Bal. Law enforcement took swift action by placing the godown owner and the kit orderer into preventive custody. Election officials confiscated the food kits and transferred them to police custody for further investigation.

In an effort to de-escalate tensions, election officials conducted discussions with representatives from all three political fronts. Despite these talks, Prathapan and other UDF activists persisted with their blockade, resulting in their arrest and removal from the area by police. They were subsequently released without charges.

Legal Proceedings and Additional Case Registered

Police indicated that a detailed report has been submitted to the court, and an FIR is likely to be filed on Monday following judicial approval, given the election-related nature of the incident. In a related development, Thrissur West police registered a separate case concerning the alleged distribution of kits by BJP activists in Olari on Saturday evening. This case has been filed under provisions of both the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the People's Representation Act, highlighting the legal ramifications of such activities.

The incident underscores the intense political rivalry in Kerala as election day approaches, with all parties vigilant against any perceived attempts to sway voter sentiment through illicit means.
